Camp Overview

As part of the Global Leadership Youth Program, a collaboration between LJCDS and the San Diego Diplomacy Council, students are introduced to the principles of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. This helps them explore avenues for activism and advocacy and encourages them to engage in initiatives that promote and protect human rights within their own communities and on a broader scale. Students also participate in a challenging international diplomacy simulation and interact with experts in the field of human rights.

Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on December 10. It commemorates the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was proclaimed as a “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations,” towards which individuals and societies should “strive by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance.”

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights sets out a broad range of fundamental rights and freedoms to which all are entitled. It guarantees the rights of every individual everywhere, without distinction based on nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion, language, or any other status.

Although the Declaration is not a binding document, it inspired more than 60 human rights instruments which together constitute an international standard of human rights. Today, the general consent of all United Nations Member States on the basic human rights laid down in the Declaration makes it even stronger and emphasizes the relevance of human rights in our daily lives.

By studying recent events and issues, students connect the principles of the UDHR to modern challenges, such as refugee rights, LGBTQ+ rights, racial equality and more. Students explore avenues for activism and advocacy, encouraging them to engage in initiatives that promote and protect human rights within their own communities and on a broader scale.

This course is not at LJCDS, and transportation is not provided. Students need to travel to UC San Diego Park and Market, 1100 Market St, San Diego, CA 92101.
